My own writing

For children, I am the author of Great Britons: 50 Amazing People Who Have Called Britain Home, illustrated by Sara Mulvanny, published by Nosy Crow in October 2021. For Nosy Crow, I have also written Great Elizabethans: HM Queen Elizabeth II and 25 Amazing Britons From Her Reign, a special paperback published to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“This illustrated volume of 50 lively and engaging biographies demonstrates the breadth of precious contributors to our Britishness, from Boudicca to Malorie Blackman, Mo Farah to Robert the Bruce.”
-Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times
“From the creators of Great Britons comes the incredible story of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign, told through the stories of 25 diverse Britons.”
-Fiona Noble, The Bookseller

For Ladybird, I have written The Big Book of the UK, a non-fiction guide to the United Kingdom for 5+, illustrated by the brilliant Louise Lockhart.

“The topics are delightfully irreverent, including a guide to the nation’s cheese, a tour of bookish Britain, a field guide to magical creatures and a whole page of rude place names. Lockhart’s vibrant, energetic art is a joy to pore over”
Fiona Noble, The Bookseller

I have also written The Ladybird Big Book of Slimy Things, a comic-style voyage through a museum filled with hagfish, snails, slimy-coated sloths and man-made slime! It’s illustrated by Binny Talib, and is a Very Bright Green.

“A great book for children who love facts, slime, animals, science and all manner of weird and wonderful things”

The Ladybird Big Book of Slimy Things

For adults, I’m the author of a collection of poetry called The Women Left Behind, which is published by Dempsey and Windle, and illustrated by the Greenaway-winning artist Chris Riddell.

“Rapunzel’s witch; Blodeuwedd, who was shaped from flowers; and Romeo’s Rosaline, among many others – English literature forgot them, closed the door and turned away. Now at last we have their voices: wry, lamenting, vengeful, witty, bright, magnificent”
Hilary McKay’s Best Books of 2019, The Guardian
